About Bexley

Bexley isn’t your typical London Borough. It occupies the space where the urban and rural come together, offering a fantastic quality of life. Excellent local amenities, the buzz and diversity of an urban centre, easy access to central London, and proximity to green spaces and the coast means that there is something for everyone.

The Borough is situated in the south-east of London, in a key location in the Thames Gateway between major growth areas in London and Kent. We believe we are uniquely positioned to support innovation and growth within the green sector, with the vital attributes of space for development and easy access to the city centre.

It’s a changing Borough. The population is currently estimated to be almost 250,000, living in 93,500 households. By 2030 it’s estimated that numbers will grow to over 260,000 and almost 300,000 by 2050. Managing this growth effectively is a priority for the Council. 

With Bexleyheath at its centre, Bexley has four major district centres – Crayford, Erith, Sidcup and Welling. Transport connections are excellent both into and out of central London. Bexley is one of the greenest Boroughs in London with over 100 parks and 1,100 hectares of Green Belt Land. Bexley is close to the M25 as well as access to Europe through the high-speed Channel Tunnel Rail Link station at Ebbsfleet, and the A2/A20 run through the Borough.

30% of Bexley residents are young people (under the age of 25) which makes us the 14th youngest Borough in London. Bexley has the 4th highest rate of people aged 65 and over in London at 16.6%. This number will increase to 22% in 2050. 78% of our working age population are in employment, and in 2022 the average income for those in full-time employment was £40,951.

With one of the lowest crime rates in London, Bexley is known to be a safe place. And the fact that the Borough is close to the centre of London while still being a green, safe and friendly place to be means it truly has the best of both worlds.

Bexley is a diverse Borough; its ethnic minority population is increasing and will continue to do so – this is in line with our neighbouring Boroughs and the rest of London.

• 28.1% of residents are from an ethnic minority background (excluding white minorities).

• Including white minorities, 35.6% of residents are from an ethnic minority background.

• The north of the Borough has a diverse population – Thamesmead East, Belvedere and Slade Green and North End wards have the highest population of ethnic minority residents.

• 90% of residents speak English at home as their first language. This is higher than the London average but has gradually decreased by 4% since 2011. The top three non-English languages spoken in Bexley are Romanian, Panjabi and Polish.
